In the beginning of the 13th century, Līvu Square was the first marketplace in Cēsis. There was a church, cementery and Rīga Gate in the stone wall of the city. The cobblestone bears a mark, noting where Rīga Gate stood during the Middle Ages. The fountain is located in the place where the first well of the city once stood.

Latvian- Estonian memorial to the battles of Cēsis (Wenden) The battles of Cēsis were one of the decisive battles in the War of Independence of Latvia. The battles took place in June 1919 between units of the Estonian army and the 2nd Latvian Infantry Regiment of the Northern Latvian Brigade in the one hand and the Baltic Landeswehr and the Iron Division on the other. From the students of Cēsis and Valmiera schools, a group of students of the Cēsis Regiment was created to supply the only 300 soldiers strong 2nd Cēsis Regiment before the above mentioned Estonian & Latvian troops managed to reach Cēsis. The battles of Cēsis ended with the victory of the combined Estonian and Latvian forces and proved as a critical moment in the War of Independence by stopping and repelling the German offensive and turning it into a counterattack.
