Šilelis Educational Trail

Highlight • Trail

Šilelis educational trail is a trip full of impressions and discoveries on foot through the picturesque Šilelis forest with a landscape of unique beauty, its characteristic flora and fauna. You will travel most of the trail along the picturesque coast of Vištytis Lake, which is distinguished by the variety of shores - in some places, very gentle slopes can suddenly rise to a height of 50 meters. You will see the cliff, the "Witch's broom", woody trees, the highest Vištytis fir, the Holy spring, the sufosis circus, and you will visit the viewpoint "View of the Rominta forest". While traveling along this trail, you will not only spend your time meaningfully, you will learn many interesting facts, but you will be able to refresh yourself with the water of the Holy Spring, take a breather, and sit in comfortably equipped canopies.

The Šilelis educational trail is a circular trail, the beginning and end of which is marked by a stand located by the road Vištytis - Vyžainis. The trail has two tracks of different lengths, so when you reach the Holy Spring, you should decide whether to continue the hike with the short or the long track. The length of the short track is about 2.4 km, the long track is 3.4 km. The short course is covered in an hour and a half, while the long course requires more endurance and time, so you can complete it in two and a half hours. You will find interesting information about the visited objects at the stands located on the educational trail. The trail is marked with special circular trail markers with a tree symbol in the middle, which serve as landmarks to help visitors stay on track.

When you visit the Metalo Fantazija Museum, you will see unique products made of metal parts that have been doomed to recycling or destruction. In the museum you will see more than 800 exhibits from the worlds of flora, fauna and modern improvisations. The Metalo Fantazija Museum is an integral part of the open-air Pušelė campsite, which comes alive in other colors at night, so an overnight stay at the campsite is probably the only way to spend the night in a museum in Lithuania!

On the shore of Lake Vištytis, in the forest of Šilelis, fresh water gushes from the Holy Spring. People’s stories tell us that the water in this spring elsewhere was actually extraordinary. When the eyes were enough to eat it and the blind man saw, wounds that were difficult to heal quickly healed. And in our day there are stories of miraculous healing, many believe in its miraculous power. Believing in the power of the Holy Fountain, people from the farthest corners sprinkle with water and build crosses on a hill near the fountain. Year after year, the number of crosses is increasing, and the locals already call the roller coaster at the source the cross roller coaster. When people began to believe in the power of spring water, there is no exact knowledge. This more interesting event has been heard from old people’s stories.

Before the First World War, one poor peasant had seen St. The Virgin Mary, who asked her to build a cross at the source. The poor man, even most desirous, could not fulfill the request because he had neither a horse, nor a chariot, nor a tree from which to make only an ax. She shamed her wife and forgot the request. After a while, he dreamed again of the mother of God, who in the dream assured man that only he could build the cross. After dreaming the same dream for the third time, he went to a neighbor in the morning and told him everything. He calmed him down and promised to help. They went to the forest, cut down an oak tree, and soon a cross was erected at the source.

People, believing that the power of God was here, began to attend the cross, pray, sprinkle with spring water, believing that water cures all sorts of diseases, especially eye diseases. Apparently faith can really work wonders…

The museum is rather disappointing, but the site is relatively expensive (€20 for one person with a tent - August 2025). The location on the lake is very beautiful.

The border is closed, but worth a visit. If someone is taking photos under the fence where the last house is, it's worth looking up. There's a rotating camera there, looking at you. If I remember correctly, it could be operating the loom of this large building.

The holy source of Vištinets has its own legend. On the trees surrounding this place are hung works of art. Worth seeing.

The place where the borders of Poland, Lithuania and Russia meet. Unfortunately, apart from a pole surrounded by barbed wire, there is nothing else here. We were passing by, which is why we visited this place. A ride or a walk that necessarily includes seeing this place is not worth the effort in my opinion, but everyone can do as they please.
