At a height of 52m above sea level, you not only have a view of the Russian enclave of Kaleningrad, while imagining an eternal sundial behind you, but you also find this memorial stone, which is intended to commemorate French prisoners of war.

The Parnidis Dune is located on the Curonian Spit about 1 km southwest of the Lithuanian town of Nida and about 1.5 km north of the Russian border. Its eastern slopes fall directly into the Curonian Lagoon. The dune is now about 52 meters high above sea level. According to some sources, it is even said to be over 60 meters high, whereas according to SRTM data it is only 44 meters above sea level at its highest point. This makes it one of the largest shifting dunes in Europe. It was the second highest after the Dune du Pilat in France and, depending on its actual height today, may still be. Due to erosion and human influences (unauthorized climbing on the steep slopes), the Parnidis Dune lost about 15 meters in height between 1984 and 2004 alone. Despite various measures, it continues to lose height every year. Source: Wikipedia

The pristine sand dunes of Neringa have hosted a camp of French prisoners of war between 1870 and 1872, during the Franco-German war. Due to the abysmal living conditions, many died and were buried here in the sand, giving this place its gruesome name.
