In 1841, Reverend Heldring embarked on a multi-day hike across the Veluwe. During this journey, he was moved by the poverty of the heathland residents, including those at Hoenderloo. He donated a church, a school, and a good well to this village. For those interested in this hike across the Veluwe, I recommend Heldring's book, "De Veluwe, Eene Wandeling" (The Veluwe, A Walk). The Iron Man ; The Iron Man is a fen in the Hoge Veluwe National Park, created by iron mining in the past. The fen is located in Deelense Veld and can form a unique heath stream in heavy rainfall. The name refers to the former iron mining on the Veluwe, where iron ore was extracted, melted and processed.

A solid bridge ensures that you can reach the other side dry-shod. If the weather is wet, be aware that the road surface can be slippery.

The correct name of this installation is EuropaHammer by the artist Andreas Rimkus. On this site you see the large hammer with a young tree through the opening in the center. In the immediate vicinity seven hammer heads are forged. The hammer heads are placed on all seven continents: in Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, South America, North America and Antarctica. In about two hundred years each hammer will have its own handle. Only then will the Generations artwork by Andreas Rimkus be complete.

Why is General Christiaan de Wet, who fought in the last Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa, standing in this vast sandy plain? The monument is located in the Otterlose Zand because this landscape reminded Christiaan de Wet and the Kröller-Müller couple of the African landscape during a visit to the De Hoge Veluwe. The wealthy couple were great admirers of General de Wet and commissioned the erection of this monument.

This heathland is located on the edge of the Spelderholt estate. Especially in the flowering period (August/September) when the surroundings turn purple, this is a true spectacle to walk through.
