The Orvelter Lock is one of three locks in the Oranjekanaal (Orange Canal) that was replaced by a concrete one in the 1950s. Although the canal was closed to shipping in 1976, it remained important for water management and was used to transport water between central and eastern Drenthe. Since then, the Reest en Wieden water board has replaced the old emergency pumping system at the locks with new pumps, and a small underwater pump house has been installed to drain the water.
