Texel may be best known for its wide beaches and lush pastures, but the largest of the Dutch West Frisian Islands also has forests to offer – not many, but fine ones. And they are excellent for exploring by bike. 140 kilometers of cycle paths crisscross Texel, well signposted and suitable for every level. The core of the network is the junction system with 76 numbered points – it's hard to get lost, even if the sheep are disrupting your sense of direction again. Those looking for a structured tour will find numerous predefined routes online and at the tourist information center. The most famous forest on Texel is De Dennen, in the west of the island between Den Hoorn and De Koog. The name is a bit misleading, as it's not really a dense forest, but a dune landscape with trees – but that's exactly what makes it appealing. Here, the paths wind through sandy ground, past wind-shaped pine trees and open dunes.

Amazingly long, very fun singletrack. Completely S0. For experienced MTB riders, it's also very suitable for gravel riding. I rode the entire circuit on race gravel on 40mm light-tread tires/semi-slicks on the rear and had a lot of fun.
