The Franciscan Church, popularly known as the "Paterkeskerk" (Little Fathers' Church), is perhaps Hasselt's most famous monument. People come from far and wide to Minderbroedersstraat to beg for a favor at the tomb of Valentinus Paquay, "Het Heilig Paterke" (The Little Father). This is also the building's main merit, as it's certainly not an architectural highlight. The church is a rather austere, single-nave Baroque building. Construction began around 1645. The bluestone entrance gate with its triangular pediment underwent some alterations in the 18th century, whether intentional or not. The coats of arms of the Baron and Baroness van Vogelsang, benefactors of the monastery, were carved into this pediment. The French occupiers roughly chipped off these coats of arms, and the damage was never repaired. At the end of the 18th century, the friars were expelled by the French occupiers, and all the furnishings, including the church bells, were sold. Throughout the 19th century, the church continued to be used as a military depot, barn, and stable. The Friars Minor themselves returned to the city in 1846, where they served the Church of Our Lady. However, it wasn't until 1898 that they were able to repurchase their former monastery buildings and the church. The church was restored almost immediately. At the behest of Father Valentinus Paquay, it was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Father Paquay himself died in 1905 after more than 50 years in the order. Twenty years after his death, the burial chapel of Valentinus Paquay was built right next to the church, which quickly became known to the people of Hasselt as "Het Heilig Paterke" (Little Holy Father). His remains were interred there in 1926 and were given a monumental tomb designed by the artist Holemans. Father Valentinus' life has continued to fascinate the people of Hasselt to such an extent that a committee arranged for the Pope to beatify him in 2003. One of the many benches in the area, but one where the vastness of the heathland is just that little bit more apparent.
