Werderturm and Remains of the City Wall

Highlight • Historical Site

According to tradition, the tower was built around 1530. It was part of the Werder Gate, which no longer exists today, and thus the city wall, the construction of which began in 1523. In the course of the city's expansion, however, the fortification lost its function over time. The walls were torn down and the building materials were used to build houses and bridges. The tower was preserved; In 1659 a clock was installed. The wooden dial is still preserved and is now in the Gubin Museum Chamber.

Peitz Fortress Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

In Peitz, there was a castle complex that dates back to the 13th century. In the mid-16th century, Johann V, Margrave of Brandenburg-Neumark, commissioned the conversion of the castle complex into a citadel (Oberfestung). The conversion took place between 1559 and 1562. Essential parts of the former castle are located in the Generalturm of the fortress (Festungsturm). Between 1590 and 1995, extensive fortifications were built around the city (Unterfestung). Renowned fortress architects of European standing such as Chiramella, Arkanat, and above all Lynar were involved in the construction.
During the Thirty Years' War (1618 – 1648), the fortress town offered protection to many nobles and church dignitaries. Even the Brandenburg Elector Georg Wilhelm moved his seat of government to Peitz in the winter of 1637/38.
In 1767, King Frederick the Great ordered the demolition of the fortress. Nevertheless, Peitz still possesses valuable remnants from the fortress era today. The most significant structure is the Festungsturm from the 13th/16th century.

I immediately noticed this ruin in Lieberose because it looks so romantic. It is the town church, which was built in the 15th century and was heavily destroyed by bombs in World War II. It has only been propped up and preserved as is. A local resident told me that there are efforts to roof it over to make it a meeting and memorial place. However, nothing has happened to date. In my opinion, it can gladly remain as it is, because it looks breathtakingly beautiful even like this.
