Tips from the Community

September 20, 2023, Bridge over Campbell Creek

If you don't mind a quick foray onto the footpath beside busy Dimond Blvd, this bridge gives a nice view of Campbell Creek below. It's also a good place to stop your hike or ride; in theory the public has access to Campbell Lake to the south, but going there often involves contact with unpleasant homeowners who dispute the public easements that allow lake access.

This park has open sports fields, a picnic pavilion that is free for use if not reserved by another party (fee applies), and some playground equipment. It's also a great place to access the unpaved, but still pretty easy to ride, network of multi-use trails on this side of town.

September 18, 2023, Abbott Multi-Use Trail

This multi-use trail is mostly hard-packed dirt. It's totally non-technical, though, excepting some persistent muddy spots, so as long as you don't have skinny road tires it's pretty easily bikeable. Please keep an eye out for wildlife like bears and moose, as encounters are always possible around here โ€” and watch for oncoming bike traffic and slower walkers, as this is a little narrower than many other multi-use trails in town.

This is actually several trails cobbled together to create the route for the Tour of Anchorage, a ski marathon that happens every March. There's also a fat-tire-bike division, and these trails are a popular choice for summer biking, too. The riding surface is mostly a mix of wide, hard-packed dirt and gravel that most bikes can handle, as long as you don't have skinny road-racing tires.

September 18, 2023, Service High School

There is a back parking lot that the public routinely uses for access to the trails around Service High School. It's also one of the starting points for the Tour of Anchorage, which is actually a ski marathon. But there is a fat-tire-bike division as well, and the Tour of Anchorage Trail is great for summer biking too.

This is a nice paved, roadside multi-use trail that is separated from the road by a grassy verge.

September 18, 2023, Birch Road Trail

For most of its length the Birch Road Trail is a nice, paved path that is set apart from the road by a grassy divider. If you don't live in the neighborhood, Service High School is one of the best places to park to access this trail.

This trail is broad and mostly hardened gravel with spots of pavement. Overall, it serves to connect neighborhoods on the east side of Anchorage with the greater trail network, but it such a lovely ride that it's become a bit of a sensation after opening just this year.
