The conservation work was completed in 2024 and now the castle looks superb. Really recommend as very intact 12c building. Lovely town too and good walks in the area.

Access to Orford Ness is exclusively via a National Trust ferry that departs from Orford Quay. It is essential to book your tickets in advance as capacity is limited and walk-up tickets are not available. The ferry ride itself is part of the unique experience of visiting this remote shingle spit.
No, dogs are not permitted on Orford Ness or Havergate Island. This rule is in place to protect the fragile shingle ecosystem and the significant populations of ground-nesting birds and other sensitive wildlife that the reserve supports.
The hiking terrain is predominantly flat but can be challenging underfoot. Most trails are on shingle, which can be tiring to walk on for long distances. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended. The landscape is very exposed, so be prepared for wind and changing weather conditions.

Orford Ness has a fascinating and secret past as a military testing site from 1913 through the Cold War. Key experiments in aerial combat, bomb ballistics, and early radar development took place here. The most iconic remnants are the concrete 'pagodas', which were laboratories for the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, designed to contain accidental explosions.
The reserve is a crucial habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. It's especially renowned for its birdlife, including large numbers of wading birds like Avocets and Black-tailed Godwits, particularly in autumn and winter. You may also spot Chinese water deer and brown hares in the marshes, and a growing colony of grey seals can often be seen along the coast.
