The regulation of the Danube between Vienna and the March from 1870 onwards exacerbated the problems of the Marchfeld population, as the Danube deepened further. The groundwater level in the Marchfeld continued to drop and bodies of water dried up. Over-exploitation of the groundwater body and official restrictions on water abstraction due to excessively high nitrate levels worsened the problem situation in the course of the 20th century. The Marchfeld became the most intensively farmed region in Austria. Between 1986 and 2004, the Marchfeld canal system, almost 100 km in total length – consisting of artificial canals and adapted streams – was finally built, with the main channel being flooded as early as 1992.

Located on a hill above the Danube, the abbey offers a charming setting for a day trip from the big city. The guided tour we participated in was very knowledgeable and provided good insight into the abbey's history.

St. Martin's Church in Klosterneuburg rises above the Danube Valley and is clearly visible from the cycle path along the Klosterneuburg Danube canal. Particularly from the north and west sides, there is an unobstructed view of the striking church building, which serves as a landmark above the town's rooftops. Dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, the church originally dates back to the Carolingian era and has been remodeled in Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles over the centuries. The interior is characterized by a bright nave with groin vaults, a monumental Baroque high altar, and medieval gravestones, while archaeological finds beneath the church floor document the site's long history.
