The Herdorf train station, a brick building on the Siegtalbahn line (Betzdorf–Haiger), lost its passenger service in 1970. Since the 19th century, it had been an important transshipment point for regional ore extraction. Numerous mines and the local Friedrichshütte steelworks were served from there, including by one of the first mine railways (built in 1862). The history of the station and the region is closely intertwined with mining.
