Tabernas Castle, built in the 11th century, is one of the most important Nasrid fortresses in Almería. Located high on a hill, it offers spectacular views over the Tabernas Desert and preserves part of its walls despite centuries of neglect and destruction. The Catholic Monarchs stayed here and the Capitulations of Almería were signed in 1489, giving it great historical significance. Access is free, and although the site is in ruins, comfortable shoes are recommended to explore it and enjoy the unique surrounding landscape.

Almería offers incredibly diverse terrain for gravel biking. You'll encounter the arid, rugged landscapes of the Tabernas Desert with its ochre canyons and dry riverbeds, contrasting sharply with the volcanic coastlines, pristine beaches, and cliffs of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. Inland, routes ascend through mountain ranges like Sierra Alhamilla, providing challenging climbs and panoramic views. Expect a mix of dirt tracks, gravel roads, and sometimes sandy or rocky sections.
Almería boasts a vast network of routes, with over 130 gravel bike trails available on komoot. These routes cater to various skill levels, from moderate explorations to difficult, long-distance adventures across the region's unique landscapes.
Thanks to its exceptional climate with around 3,000 hours of sunshine annually, Almería is suitable for gravel biking almost year-round. However, spring and autumn are highly recommended for longer adventures to avoid the intense summer heat and potential winter snow in the higher mountain ranges.
Given the varied and often technical terrain, a gravel bike with a minimum of 42mm tires and good grip is highly recommended. Some sections can be challenging with washed-out channels, rubble, and rocks, so confident riding skills are also beneficial.
While specific permits are not generally required for gravel biking on established tracks within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park or the Tabernas Desert, it's crucial to respect the protected natural environment. Always stay on marked trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and carry out all your waste. Some areas might have specific restrictions, so it's always good to check local signage.
Many gravel routes in Almería pass by fascinating landmarks. In the Tabernas Desert, you might encounter the Tabernas Oasis or the dramatic Tabernas Ravine. Along the coast, the San Miguel Tower, Cabo de Gata and the Collado de la Vela Blanca offer stunning views. The region also features charming white villages and historical sites reflecting its rich cultural legacy.
Yes, Almería offers numerous circular gravel routes. For instance, the challenging TransAlmeria gravel circular to Velez-Blanco explores the inland mountain areas. Along the coast, you can enjoy loops like the Cabo de Gata Lighthouse – Collado de la Vela Blanca loop from Collado de Cueva Obra, which navigates volcanic landscapes and coastal tracks.
The gravel bike trails in Almería range from moderate to difficult. While there are some easier sections, many routes involve challenging climbs and descents, especially in the mountain ranges, and can include technical sections with loose gravel or rocky terrain. Over 80 of the routes on komoot are rated as difficult, requiring good fitness and experience.
Absolutely. Almería is home to extensive long-distance gravel routes. The 'TransAlmería Gravel' is a notable adventure, showcasing the incredible diversity of the region across various natural parks and the Tabernas desert. Shorter, yet still substantial, routes like the Cortijo del Fraile – Collado de la Vela Blanca loop from San Isidro de Nijar offer a significant challenge.
The gravel biking experience in Almería is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars from over 100 reviews. More than 1100 gravel bikers have used komoot to explore Almería's varied terrain, often praising the unique combination of desert, coast, and mountains, and the extensive network of routes.
While many routes in Almería are rated as difficult, there are some easier options suitable for families or beginners. It's best to look for routes specifically marked as 'easy' or 'moderate' on komoot, which typically feature less elevation gain and smoother surfaces. Always check the route details and elevation profile before heading out with family.
Parking availability varies by trail. For routes in popular areas like Cabo de Gata Natural Park or near Tabernas Desert, you can often find designated parking areas at trailheads or in nearby villages. It's advisable to check the starting point of your chosen route on komoot for specific parking information, as many tours start from accessible locations.
Policies for bringing bikes on public transport (buses and regional trains) in Almería can vary. Generally, regional trains (Renfe) often allow bikes, sometimes with a small fee or during off-peak hours. Local bus services might have more restrictions, especially for full-sized bikes. It's recommended to check with the specific transport provider beforehand for their current bike policy.
