Ghost Town Paria trail can be sandy and muddy after heavy rains. The trail does not offer any coverage from the sun, so make sure to bring ample water. The trail is open to vehicles and there is a parking lot close to the ghost town but the road is often washed out beyond Paria Cemetery. This trail leads to the abandoned western outpost that is Paria. The ghost town has since become the set for many western films, including Clint Eastwood's The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Catstair Canyon Trail is a short trail, just off Highway 89. There are two parking lots that have entrances to this trail. There is a west parking lot and an east parking lot. The west parking lot entrance is much more accessible and does not require any kind of gear or rope to enter the canyon. The east entrance does require rope and has much steeper rocks directly at the entrance. Along this trail, in the canyon, you will see a high canyon wall and two tall stacks of old, discarded cars. The cars were put in this area with plans for them to be used in the construction of the highway but that didn't pan out and the construction companies left them in the canyon.

Yellow Rock Trail has a steep and strenuous climb on the way in. It is more or less a giant, multicolored hill of slick rock. From the top, hikers get great views of the surrounding mountains and rock formations. Be sure to take caution on the way down, the rock can have smaller loose rocks and the descent is very steep.

Lick Wash is a diverse trail with sections of close slot canyon walls, tall pines, and sandstone rock formations. Hikers can find pink pebbles and stones in the wash from the Pink Cliffs nearby.

Bull Valley Gorge is an interesting hike, due to the geology of the area as well as the evidence that remains from a car accident that happened over the gorge in the 1950s. A car hangs at the top of the deep gorge just off of the road, frozen in time.

The trail to Grosvenor Arch is very short and you can see the arches from afar in the parking lot. The rock that the double arch is in towers high above the desert. This arch is named after the first permanent editor of National Geographical Magazine. He was the editor-in-chief of the magazine for 55 years.

Hiking here offers a true wilderness experience across a remote, high-elevation landscape. The region is famous for its dramatic geology, including deep sandstone slot canyons, expansive washes leading to unique hoodoos, and natural arches. It's also a world-renowned site for Late Cretaceous dinosaur fossils.
While there are no fees to enter the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, free permits are required for all overnight trips, including both backpacking and car camping. These can be obtained at the monument's visitor centers. It's always best to check with the official monument authorities for the most current regulations before your trip.
The best seasons for hiking the Kaiparowits Plateau are spring and fall. These months offer moderate temperatures suitable for exploring the exposed terrain. Summers can be dangerously hot, while winter may bring snow and cold conditions, especially at higher elevations.
The trails range from easy walks to demanding multi-day treks. There are over 25 routes to choose from, with the majority being easy or moderate. However, even easier trails require careful preparation due to the remote and rugged nature of the terrain. The most challenging routes involve off-trail navigation and are suitable only for experienced and self-sufficient backpackers.
Yes, there are several accessible options. The short walk to Grosvenor Arch is a great choice, offering a view of a magnificent double arch with minimal effort. Another option is the Ghost Town Paria Trail, which is a relatively flat walk along the Paria River.
Accessing trailheads often requires driving on unpaved roads. While some main routes like Cottonwood Canyon Road may be passable for standard cars in dry conditions, many other roads are rough and require a high-clearance, 4-wheel-drive vehicle. Roads can become impassable when wet. Always check current road conditions at a visitor center before heading out.
The primary challenges are the region's remoteness, the arid climate, and the rugged terrain. Water is extremely scarce and unreliable, so you must carry all the water you need. Navigation can be difficult, especially in washes and off-trail areas. The weather can also be extreme, with intense sun and heat in the summer and sudden storms.
Absolutely. The plateau is an exceptional destination for experienced backpackers seeking solitude. Routes like the Lick Wash Trail can be extended into longer journeys. The area also offers limitless potential for off-trail exploration and creating custom loops, but this requires expert navigation skills and careful planning around water sources.
Self-sufficiency is key. Essential items include a map and compass or GPS, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), and sturdy hiking shoes. Most importantly, carry more water than you think you'll need, as sources are rare. Also pack layers of clothing, a first-aid kit, and plenty of snacks.
Yes, the plateau is incised by numerous slot canyons. For a moderately challenging hike through a deep and narrow gorge, consider the Bull Valley Gorge. Another interesting option is the Catstair Canyon Trail. Always check weather forecasts before entering any slot canyon, as flash floods are a serious danger.
The region is highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.6 stars. Hikers frequently praise the incredible solitude and the stunning, otherworldly landscapes, particularly the unique geology of the slot canyons and hoodoos. The sense of adventure and exploring a truly wild area are common themes in reviews.
For a different kind of scenery, the Yellow Rock Trail is a great choice. It involves a steep climb but rewards you with an expansive landscape of swirling, multi-colored sandstone that feels like another planet. It offers fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding area.
