Just a few minutes from the famous Pont du Gard lies the prehistoric rock shelter of Salpêtrière – a real insider tip for history and nature lovers. People lived here thousands of years ago, using the natural rock overhang as shelter. Archaeological finds attest to settlement from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic period. The path there is short and leads through a quiet, Mediterranean landscape. Those who visit the Pont du Gard can wonderfully combine the rock shelter with a hike and get an impression of how our ancestors lived in this historically rich place.

The most beautiful view of the Pont du Gard opens up from the opposite river bank. From there you can admire the impressive Roman aqueduct in its full glory and take great photos – especially in the morning or at sunset, when the warm light makes the stone glow golden. A majestic site that deserves respect (like everything else, for that matter). After a path and a narrower trail, you can glimpse the cave entrance, which opens almost directly onto you, just a few meters from the main path. It's fenced off. Simply continue along this path, and you'll easily find yourself in front of the cave entrance, where you'll need to crouch briefly before the cave opens up to you, revealing its shaft of light. A few very narrow passages lead to a short continuation. Full trip report, with photos, at mickaelfr.eu
