Beautiful area along the Große Lauter river

Great route for everyone... but you're probably rarely alone here

When I created this highlight in September 2020, it was already clear that the Lauter Valley would be busy on the weekends. It's simply a beautiful valley and a wonderful place to cycle. The fantastic Alb vegetation and the Lauter River are a truly special experience. You're never alone here! Not even during the week – there are people commuting to work in the mornings, too. It's best between Monday and Wednesday. We were here on a Saturday, and obviously, a lot of people were busy, as there weren't many cyclists and other road users on the road. If you're looking for solitude, you should cycle to a valley without a federal highway.

Rechtenstein is rich in natural beauty. You can explore the picturesque Great Lauter Valley, known for its meandering river, castle ruins, and excellent cycling and hiking paths. The Danube River itself offers scenic views and opportunities for activities along its banks, including the Donauradwanderweg (Danube Cycle Path). The Braunsel River, flowing into the Danube, has surrounding natural protection areas, and a trail leads past the mighty Hochwartfelsen to its spring. Don't miss the intriguing Geisterhöhle (Ghost Cave) at the village entrance.
For stunning panoramic views, visit the Hohengundelfingen castle ruins, which offer a magnificent vista over the Lautertal and neighboring castles. Another excellent spot is the Hochwarthütte, which provides a splendid distant view and has an adjacent hiking parking lot.
Yes, the Wimsener Cave (also known as Friedrich Cave) is a must-see. It's the only 'active' water cave in Germany that can be navigated by boat, making it a unique experience for all ages. The Geisterhöhle (Ghost Cave) at the entrance to Rechtenstein village also offers an intriguing natural feature to explore.
Rechtenstein boasts several historical sites. The impressive Ruine Rechtenstein (Rechtenstein Castle Ruins), also known as Burg Stein, dates back to the 12th century and overlooks the village and the Danube. The St. Georg Parish Church, built in 1744, is a beautiful baroque church with a distinctive onion dome. Further afield, the Hohengundelfingen castle ruins offer a glimpse into medieval history with panoramic views.
Yes, the Ruine Rechtenstein (Burg Stein) is accessible. The keep, with its thick walls, is particularly notable, and the tower was renovated in the 1980s, offering magnificent distant views. The former castle chapel is now the Church of St. George.
The Rechtenstein area, part of the Swabian Alb, offers a variety of well-maintained hiking paths. You can find easy strolls along the Danube or more challenging routes through the Lautertal. The Great Lauter Valley provides gentle hiking and cycling paths, and many restaurants and farm ice cream shops make for pleasant breaks. Easy hikes, like those along the Braunsel River, are also great for families.
