The scenery is nice in this area. You can see for miles in many parts. This is a slightly elevated area, the wind is far more stronger as it is an exposed area

Sheriffs Pit is the location of an old iron mine. The views here are mint, you can see for miles through the valleys at the side of the double track

Major junction of Rudland Rigg running broadly north-south and the Lyke Wake Walk running broadly east-west. West takes you past Round Hill to Urra Moor and the car park at Clay Bank, east follows the disused Farndale Railway. Most of the tracks around this location are very wide and easy walking.

Highest point in the North York Moors with beautiful views in all directions. From here you can take several options to cycle down.

Bloworth Crossing used to be a railway crossing. The railway line (carrying iron ore) ran from Battersby to Rosedale for 11 miles. These days, it is a cycling and walking/hiking heaven. Easy, comfortable tracks to ride on with preposterously beautiful views in just about any direction your heart directs you to look at!

When is the best time of year to go gravel biking in Rosedale East Side?

Spring and autumn are generally considered ideal for gravel biking in Rosedale East Side. In spring, the moorland comes alive with new growth, while autumn offers stunning colours. Winters can be challenging due to colder temperatures, potential ice, and shorter daylight hours, though some experienced riders enjoy the solitude.

Are there any less crowded gravel trails in the area?

While popular routes can see more activity, the vastness of the North York Moors means it's often possible to find quieter sections. Exploring some of the less-trafficked tracks away from the main villages can offer a more secluded experience. Consider routes starting from smaller hamlets rather than the main hubs.

What kind of surfaces can I expect on Rosedale East Side gravel trails?

You can expect a varied mix of surfaces. Trails often combine sections of surfaced tracks, such as quiet country roads and former railway lines, with unsurfaced tracks that can include compacted gravel, loose stones, and potentially muddy sections, especially after rain. This diversity is characteristic of gravel biking in the North York Moors.

Are there places to eat or drink near the gravel bike trails?

Yes, several villages and hamlets in and around Rosedale East Side offer pubs and cafes where you can refuel. Rosedale Abbey and Hutton-le-Hole are good starting points with amenities. What should I wear for gravel biking in Rosedale East Side during autumn?

Autumn weather in the North York Moors can be unpredictable. It's best to dress in layers, including a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Gloves, a hat or buff, and appropriate eyewear are also recommended. Given the varied terrain, sturdy gravel-specific shoes are advisable.
