Wonderful view from the west flank of the summit of Großer Arber (1,456 m) down to the idyllic Karsee lake (920 m) and the surrounding landscape in the Bavarian Forest.

Centuries ago, an important trade route led across the border between Bavaria and Bohemia. During the Cold War, this came to an end: The Iron Curtain sealed the border. Barbed wire, barriers, and border guards separated the two countries. Today, the border is open again, and the Ferdinandsthal crossing connects the Bavarian Forest with the Šumava National Park. You can easily cross the border here on foot, by bike, or on skis.

The view of the Großer Arber is very bare, but the view of the Kleiner Arbersee and the associated panorama is beautiful.
