Berg Castle, built on a hill above the town of Nennig, consists of two connected former moated castles. The lower castle is privately owned and is gradually falling into disrepair, while the upper castle, converted into a palace during the Renaissance, houses a hotel, a restaurant, and a casino. The upper castle, incidentally, was almost completely destroyed in World War II, rebuilt by the Saarland in the 1950s, and used as a school camp for about 30 years. It was only converted into a hotel in the late 1980s. Details about the history online: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Berg_(Saarland)

Ziegelberg Castle is a historic castle in Mettlach, built by Edmund von Boch in the French neo-Renaissance style of the 19th century. In its history it served as a children's holiday home, ceramics museum and restaurant, but is currently only used by a few clubs and is otherwise empty. The municipality of Mettlach is looking for new investors and usage concepts through a transparent expression of interest process. The aim is to develop a permanently viable and future-proof concept for the castle, the gatehouse and the outbuildings. The process should take into account the diverse historical and architectural significance of the castle.

The region offers a diverse range of historical sites, from medieval ruins to 19th-century architectural gems. You can find well-preserved fortifications like Montclair Castle, Baroque-style castles such as Münchweiler Castle, and impressive structures like Saareck Castle with its surrounding park. There are also ruins like Burg Grimburg, which showcase extensive medieval layouts and ongoing restoration efforts.
Yes, Montclair Castle is perched high above the famous Saarschleife (Saar Loop) and its defensive towers offer magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. Similarly, Dagstuhl Castle, though primarily a computer science center, also offers scenic views from its location.
Burg Montclair is a medieval ruin with a history dating back to Celtic times, featuring a museum in its cellar and a 'speaking book' narrating its past. Schloss Fellenberg, originally a tannery mill, now functions as a museum focusing on the regional history of Merzig-Wadern, with old photographs and artifacts. Burg Grimburg, a former state castle for the Archbishops of Trier, has a turbulent past including witch trials, and its extensive ruins offer a glimpse into medieval life and justice.
Burg Grimburg offers various programs, including guided tours for adults and youth, as well as knight and witch games for children. Münchweiler Castle and Saareck Castle are also noted as family-friendly highlights in the komoot community.
Absolutely. Many castles are integrated into scenic hiking areas. For example, Burg Montclair is an ideal rest stop after a walk on the 'Walderlebnispfad Montclair' or the 'Saarschleife-Tafeltour' premium hiking trail. You can find more hiking options in the region by exploring the Hiking in Landkreis Merzig-Wadern guide.
Schloss Fellenberg stands out with its distinctive 19th-century architecture, featuring ornate carved sandstone, turrets, oriel bay windows, and a unique two-tone design. Münchweiler Castle is a beautiful Baroque-style castle, built in 1750-1752, and is the only surviving example of an elaborate Baroque country castle plan in Saarland.
Montclair Castle features a cozy bistro and beer garden. Münchweiler Castle also has a cafe. For a more luxurious experience, Berg Castle houses a luxury hotel with a gourmet restaurant and a casino.
Burg Grimburg, with its extensive medieval layout and history as an administrative center and site of witch trials, offers a deep dive into the past. Schloss Fellenberg, now a regional history museum, provides insights into the district's heritage. Both offer rich cultural experiences for a day trip.
While popular sites like Montclair attract many visitors, exploring lesser-known ruins such as Ziegelberg Castle, Castle Ruins 2 (Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park), or Adelsköpfchen Castle Ruins can offer a more tranquil experience and a chance to discover unique historical spots.
The castles are generally accessible year-round, but spring and autumn offer pleasant weather for exploring the outdoor ruins and surrounding hiking trails. Some sites, like Burg Montclair, may have winter breaks, so it's advisable to check specific opening hours before your visit.
