An excellent rest stop where you can stay in the dormitory or stop for lunch. With a donation, you can get bread, cheese, and a tart, or whatever else they have on hand. Volunteers are definitely available on weekends. In winter, the winter shelter is open in case of emergency. There is no bathroom.

Mount Cimone! the panettone! with its 2165 meters it is the highest peak of the northern Apennines. Iconic point of arrival and special panoramic point as it is unique in Italy for this characteristic (from its summit it is possible to observe, on the clearest days, the largest land surface of the Italian territory, from the Gran Sasso Apennines to the Alpine mountain range)

It marks the border between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, if you are lucky you can see a small strip of sea between two mountains on the horizon

Absolutely. Many routes offer access to significant natural landmarks. There are also mountain huts like Pian Cavallaro Mountain Hut that can be found along some trails.
The Modena Apennines, including Montecreto, offer great conditions for mountaineering primarily during the warmer months, from late spring through early autumn. During this period, the trails are generally clear of snow, and the weather is more stable, allowing for comfortable exploration of the forests and higher elevations. Winter transforms the area into a snow sports hub, making it less suitable for typical mountaineering unless specifically equipped for snow and ice.
Yes, Montecreto offers routes that demand a higher level of fitness and experience. For instance, the Climb to Monte Cimone – Monte Cimone Summit loop from Doccia del Cimone is a moderate 11.7 km path with significant elevation gain, leading to the highest peak in the northern Apennines. Another challenging option is the Lago il Terzo – Lago della Ninfa loop from Parcheggio Camper, which is rated as difficult and involves substantial ascents.
While direct public transport to all trailheads might be limited, Montecreto does offer a chairlift to the top of Monte Cervarola during operational seasons. From there, the scenic Lake of the Nymph is just a 30-minute walk, providing easier access to higher elevations and stunning views without a full mountaineering ascent.
While the listed routes are primarily mountaineering, the region offers trails suitable for various skill levels. For a taste of the area's natural beauty that might be more accessible for families, consider exploring parts of the ancient Parco dei Castagni (Chestnut Park) in Montecreto. Although not a mountaineering route, it provides a serene environment with centuries-old trees. For more challenging family hikes, look for trails with lower elevation gains and shorter distances, such as the Colle Piaggiacalda – Vista del Paradiso loop from Lo Spigolino, a moderate 7.7 km route.
