Cham is the oldest place in the Zug region mentioned in written sources. In the year 858, the Carolingian King Louis the German donated the royal court of Cham to the Fraumünster Abbey in Zurich, which he had founded, and whose first abbess was his daughter Hildegard. Without a doubt, this donation also included the church, a predecessor to the current building, which was probably already dedicated to St. James (the Greater) at that time. Until 1244, the right of parish election and the disposal of church property (the so-called advowson) remained with the Fraumünster Abbey in Zurich. It then passed to the Bishop of Constance, to whose diocese Cham belonged at the time, then (in exchange) to the provostry of the Grossmünster in Zurich and in 1477 to the city of Zug. With the founding of the parish community of Cham in 1874, this finally took over the advowson.
