Savogno is something special. The old mountain village can only be reached on foot and exudes a wonderful tranquility. We felt very comfortable as overnight guests at the Rifugio Savogno.

Chiavenna itself is a regional hub with train and bus connections, making it possible to reach some starting points. However, many mountaineering trailheads in the deep alpine valleys might require a combination of public transport and a final walk or taxi ride. It's recommended to check local bus schedules for specific villages like San Giacomo Filippo or Piuro, which serve as starting points for routes such as the Lago Nero loop from San Giacomo Filippo or the Borgonuovo loop from Piuro.
For many popular trailheads near villages like Chiavenna, San Giacomo Filippo, or Piuro, you can typically find designated parking areas. However, given the challenging nature of these routes, parking can sometimes be limited, especially during peak season. It's always advisable to arrive early or consider carpooling if possible. For routes starting directly from Chiavenna, like the Summit Cross of Sench di Dalò loop, town parking facilities are usually available.
Yes, several routes in the area are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the popular Lago Nero loop from San Giacomo Filippo, the Summit Cross of Sench di Dalò loop from Chiavenna, and the Borgonuovo loop from Piuro. These circular routes offer a convenient way to explore the diverse landscapes without needing to arrange a return journey.
Among the routes featured, the Lago Nero loop from San Giacomo Filippo is the longest, spanning approximately 14.9 km (9.2 miles). This challenging route typically takes around 7 hours and 6 minutes to complete, involving significant elevation gain and varied alpine terrain.

The best season for mountaineering in Chiavenna is typically from late spring to early autumn (roughly June to September). During these months, the weather is generally more stable, snow has melted from higher elevations, and trails are more accessible. Always check local weather forecasts and trail conditions before heading out, as alpine weather can change rapidly.
Winter mountaineering in Chiavenna is possible but requires significant experience, specialized equipment (such as crampons, ice axes, and avalanche safety gear), and a thorough understanding of avalanche risks. Many routes become impassable or extremely hazardous due to snow and ice. It is strongly recommended to consult local guides or expert advice and check current conditions before attempting any winter ascents.
