The castle of Bütgenbach has a chequered history. Originally owned by the Counts of Limburg, it was destroyed several times over the centuries and always partially rebuilt. As early as the 13th century, the first destructions occurred, and later the complex suffered considerable damage, including from French troops in 1689. Subsequently, only individual parts were used for residential purposes, while large areas fell into disrepair or were demolished. With the extinction of the Monschau-Bütgenbach dynasty, the castle passed into the possession of other noble families before it was finally abandoned. Today, only a few remains of the former castle complex are preserved. Source: An information board located nearby.

The Bütgenbach farmstead is a protected monument consisting of four wings of quarry stone. It is located in the center of the village and is the oldest building in the area of the municipality of Bütgenbach. The estate can be traced back to the 15th century. The main parts of the farm buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries. At that time, the Bütgenbach farmstead was a feudal estate of the County of Vianden. Later owners were the von Reiffenberg and von Baring families, who are commemorated by well-preserved coat-of-arms stones from 1623 (north wing) and 1754 (gate of the main facade on the east side). The old castle of Sart This beautiful residence dates back to the second half of the 18th century. At that time, we saw at Petit Sart, in the property opposite the farm and today called "Li Tchestè", the remains of a dungeon whose foundations were brought to light in 1880 during the reconstruction of the farm and the current tower. This magnificent residence was extended in 1880 towards the rear with an annex and a tower. Preceded by a garden, the main facade, made of bricks and limestone and chained at the corners, is in the Louis XIV style. It includes a ground floor topped by an upper floor. There are seven bays, the middle one being wider than the others, limited by chains without a harp and surmounted by a small pediment with a bull's eye. The windows are framed by simple cut stone jambs with a curved lintel. The central bay stands out in this ensemble. The door in the center opens between two transom pilasters topped with two spandrels and a molded key supporting a fairly large cornice. This castle formerly belonged to Raes Blanche, Lord of the Petit Sart castle. It is for this reason that the Detroz farm is still called “Cinse Blanche”. The tower was rebuilt with stones from the old tower.
