Tips from the Community

Grace Mulligan
January 11, 2024, Flint Quarry Trail

This woodland trail is one of the most popular at the West Tyson County Park. It's a winding track with a compact dirt underfoot, and a few ups and downs but nothing major. There are lovely views of the valley and the river from the higher spots on the trail.

Lone Elk Park is a wildlife management area with a variety of different animal species on the property, including bison and elk. The White Buffalo Trail is mainly a wide singletrack trail, but there are also crushed gravel and paved paths closer to the road so that you can drive part of the loop and then get out and walk around near the car. With this being an animal preserve, no dogs are allowed in the park (not even in the car).

The Stinging Nettle Trail (named after a plant that feels like tiny razor blades and itch when you rub up against them) thankfully is not usually overgrown with Stinging Nettle. The singletrack path does travel through thick forest areas with spotty sandy and muddy sections regularly apparent on the trail. There are some great views of the Meramec River from the trail, and you can connect to a number of other trails from this path.
