Moldoveanu Peak

Highlight • Summit

The highest peak in Romania. There are different routes to get there. From Belea the route is long and somewhat strenuous. You can do the route in two days by spending the night in Podragu. You don't need any special equipment. Just good shoes and walking sticks. From the top the view in all directions is very good, weather permitting.

Great route, but I would like to point out that the ladders and transitions are not for people who are afraid of heights. We were there in May, I recommend packing a second pair of socks and a towel as wet feet are guaranteed at this time of year. Otherwise it's really a worthwhile route.

August 5, 2025, Vidraru Dam

Hello. It was in the news that the lake will be emptied this fall of 2025 for the 50 years dam revision. Around end of febr 2026 the dam will be completly drained and the lake bed and bottom parts of the dam will be visible.

To visit the Poenari Citadel, you need to find the access gate near the Dracula campsite in Arefu. This can be helpful as GPS doesn't provide accurate directions. This tour is conducted in groups at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM. The site is secured to prevent the intrusion of the numerous bears in the area. It's a good idea to be in good physical condition because you have to climb 1,480 steps and over 150 meters of elevation gain to access the site. From there, you'll also have a superb view of the Argeș Valley.

The tour offers an incredible experience through a stunning gorge with numerous waterfalls and small lakes where you can also swim. Ladders and footholds require surefootedness, and some passages can only be negotiated with dry feet at low water levels. Bears are primarily encountered along the Transfagarasan, where they like to hang out because they are fed from cars. Since you walk 1.5km along the road and there is no alternative route, you should carry bear spray. The starting point of the tour is not ideal, as you have to drive off-road for a relatively long time, and the road is affected by rockfall. It is better to park in the small parking lot at the switchback where the tour turns off the Transfagarasan into the gorge.

The Cathedral of Curtea de Argeș (Mănăstirea Curtea de Argeș, Catedrala Curtea de Argeș) is one of the most famous buildings in Romania. It stands on the foundations of a monastery and is located about one and a half kilometers north of the city. It resembles a very large and elaborate mausoleum and was built in the Byzantine style with Moorish arabesques. Its floor plan is rectangular, but there are many extensions at the back. In the center of the building there is a dome, on the front side there are two smaller dome towers, while a second dome, wider and higher than the central one, rises from the extension. On each peak there is an inverted, pear-shaped stone. It symbolizes a triple cross, which represents the Trinity. The cathedral is also the burial place of the Romanian royal family. Ferdinand I is also buried here (from Sigmaringen, Hohenzollern)
