Morskie Oko (Sea Eye)

Highlight • Lake

A picturesque place. Is also well visited here.
Until here, sneakers are sufficient but if you want to be around the lake, it should be good hiking boots.

Black Pond of Gąsienicowa

Highlight • Lake

Stunning beauty. This pond has been admired by Tatra tourists since the 19th century. The name "black" comes from the color of the water here - from the shadow cast by the mountain peaks and by the cyanobacteria covering the local boulders.

It might not be that clear why there are two castles (one rebuilt, one in ruin now) on two sides of the lake. First, imagine there was no lake. Second, imagine that Dunajec River was a border between Poland and Hungary throughout centuries and this area was a border crossing. The construction of the dam was finished in 1997, after almost 30 years. It’s main function is to control the water flow in Dunajec River, protect the lower situated towns from floods. Some people say it was built only for the Sromowce Gorals, so that they can raft 7 months in a year :-). Its area is roughly half the size of Liptovská Mára Lake, some 10,5 sq km. As in the case of Liptov Lake, here also some villages had to be moved higher. The construction of the dam and the lake had an impact on the local microclimate, increasing on 0,3º C the year average temperature in a 5km ratio.
The locals say that the weather changes a bit as well, probably due to a different terrain surface. After crossing Białka outside Frydman, you will enter Podhale. Say goodbye to Spisz/š in Frydman - the last village with the typical Spisz style church tower ornaments and the typical streets and market layout. There is also a castle.

Black Lake below Rysy

Highlight • Lake

A steep climb from Morskie Oko and you are at the extraordinary Czarny Staw. Similarly to Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy, the "black" here is from the shadows cast on the water by the mountains and the cyanobacteria that occurs here.

Since it is below Rysy, you can see Rysy, but Kazalnica, Mięguszowiecki Szczyt Czarny and Wołowy Grzbiet - there is something to see.

Dziećkowice Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

Dziećkowice Reservoir (Imieliński Reservoir) - a post-mining reservoir located between Mysłowice and Oświęcim, next to Imielin. It is located right on the border of the Śląskie and Małopolskie voivodships, it was built in 1985.
The dam is 7 meters high, the maximum depth is 12 meters, and its area is 7.3 km², while the total capacity is 52.8 million m³, the average width is about 1.8 kilometers, the length of the reservoir is 4.3 kilometers.
This reservoir was created in the mid-1970s, in an excavation that is a remnant of the former sand exploitation area, and was used in mining for backfilling purposes, for the Maczki-Bór mine in Sosnowiec. The mine was extracting sand to fill the mine workings.
Earlier in this area there was a forest with many ponds and very clean spring water - the so-called riparian forest. It is powered mainly by water, discharged from the distant system of the Skawa - Soła rivers.
It is one of the cleanest reservoirs in the Silesia Province and serves as a drinking water reservoir.

Niedzica Castle

Highlight • Castle

Stage destination on the European long-distance hiking trail E3.

A wedding was celebrated on the day of our arrival in the guesthouse, which is wonderfully located on the lake, and the next morning the decorated cake was still on the counter. The cake was not for us, but it was a successful introduction to a very special day.

Everything was nice, but do expect chaos. We paid for emergency stay, which we already knew upfront about sleeping on the floor of the dining area. But as this is our 1st hike in Poland, we only realise that hiking boots are allowed in the hut, which is something new to us, by the time the dinner is off, no one clean the floor and we just have to secure a small spot under the table along with 60 other hiker in the dining area. There are only 2 shower rooms (shared among male and female) for the whole hut, do cater for a few hours of waiting in line if you can't skip a shower. I survived with just some wet wipes.

Dunajec Castle – a medieval stronghold located on the right bank of the Czorsztyn Reservoir in the village of Niedzica-Zamek, in the Polish Spisz or Zamagurie region (Pieniny Spiskie). The castle was most likely built in the early 14th century by Kokosz Berzeviczy, likely on the site of an earlier defensive structure. During the Middle Ages and later, the castle owners' endowment included estates located in Zamagurie.
