These concrete collection shafts are buried up to 1.8 meters deep in the ground. This is where the lines of the GDR Border Communications Network (GMN) converged, connecting the border outposts with their command centers via cables. Radios were rarely used because the conversations could have been intercepted by the West. Many GMN shafts are now protected as part of the Green Belt National Natural Monument.

The former command tower of the GDR border troops has been converted into a small museum by the Wendehausen Local History Society. It is open every Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. from Easter Monday until German Unity Day on October 3. Outside of these hours, information panels in a wooden pavilion at the base of the tower provide information about the tower's mission during the Iron Curtain. Inside, the tower explains the former border installations and the living conditions of the population in the former restricted area. The tower also serves as a memorial to the victims of attempted escape from the GDR.
