The parish village of Zell lies in a valley of the Schweinfurt Rhön (Hesselbach Uplands), one and a half kilometers west of Üchtelhausen and five kilometers north-northeast of Schweinfurt. The district road SW 30, which runs through the village, leads south through the Zeller Grund valley to Schweinfurt and north to Weipoltshausen. State road 2280 runs north-south 500 meters east of the edge of Zell. The Zellergrundbach stream flows through the village. Small new housing developments in desirable locations are situated on the sometimes steep slopes surrounding the old village center. The first known written record of the village dates back to 823. The village of Lauerbach, located within the Zell district, was abandoned by 1425 at the latest.

Remnants of underground bunker systems, typical of training grounds, are present – however, they are not a large, interconnected bunker complex open to the public. The area contains several military installations and bunker remnants, some surrounded by fences and earthworks.

The Brönnhof is an approximately 25.3 square kilometer area in the Schweinfurt district, predominantly wooded and uninhabited. The centerpiece of the area is the former Brönnhof farmstead, after which the entire area is named. From 1936 to 2014, the area was used as a military training ground, initially by the Wehrmacht and from the 1960s onward as a training area for the US Army (the third largest US Army training area in Europe). After the withdrawal of US troops in 2014, the area lost its military function and was prepared for new uses. A central part of the Brönnhof is now designated as part of the National Natural Heritage – making it one of the largest nature reserves and development areas in Bavaria. (KI)

A former military training area with waterholes, numerous hedgerows, and a fair amount of history. The meadows are largely untouched and kept short by sheep, cattle, and horses.
