The high bridge over the Frío River (or "Riofrío" in the Loja town where it is located) is, along with the low bridge located in the district of Santa Bárbara, one of the two historic bridges that span this famous riverbed, with its crystal-clear waters, which originates in the foothills of the Loja mountain range, 1.5 km from here. The Riofrío Bridge was built (1535-38) at the initiative of local rancher Bartolomé Sánchez del Águila, following an agreement with the Loja Council, in exchange for access to the pastures of the nearby Ayosares pastureland. It is, therefore, neither a Roman bridge nor a Caliphate bridge, as popular tradition and local historiography have long held. What remains of its original masonry—as the bridge is periodically affected by the flooding of the unstable Salado River—shows us its double-ramp deck and its two brick spans, the smaller of the two serving as a spillway. The Riofrío Bridge, apart from its heritage value, is today an enduring symbol for the town that bears its name, well known for the quality of the waters that flow through it, which have made possible first-rate fishing (trout and sturgeon), environmental, and culinary development. In Riofrio there is a sturgeon farm for the extraction of caviar. It can be visited, although there is a price tag.
