The Spechtsbrunn barracks of the GDR border troops were located in the heavily secured restricted area near the inner-German border. It was built starting in August 1971 and was occupied by the 10th Border Company on December 1, 1971. On February 28, 1985, the 12th Border Company took over. From August 1989 to May 1990, the buildings were a reserve facility of the Sonneberg Border Command. After reunification, the area was transferred to the Federal Property Office; today it is privately owned and no longer in use.

"Destroyed by targeted fire" at this spot on July 7, 1964, the 37-year-old porcelain former Fritz Zapf from Piesau in Thuringia was killed. DDR border guards Willi K. and Manfred P. fired 31 shots at the defector. Ten years after the fall of the Wall, the two deadly shooters were sentenced by the Meiningen Regional Court for a lesser case of manslaughter to eleven months' imprisonment each, suspended on probation. The chamber justified its decision by stating that the young men, then 21 and 25 years old, had grown up under the influence of constant one-sided propaganda and had acted in the belief of fulfilling their supposed duty.
