Iron Age Smelting Furnace Obersdorf - A decisive reason why people settled in the Siegerland as early as half a millennium before Christ is seen today in the presence of near-surface and easily mineable iron ores. The smelting of red hematite, brown ore, and siderite using charcoal can be traced back to the La Tène period in the Siegerland. At that time, it was carried out in a so-called wind furnace. An example from around 500 BC was found at a La Tène settlement site in Wilnsdorf-Obersdorf (Rödgen). Such wind furnaces were used in Westphalia at least until the 15th century AD. Only then was water power utilized, replacing the bellows previously operated by hand or foot with mechanical water wheel blowers, which represented a major advance in iron smelting. The Obersdorf protected La Tène furnace complex consists, on the one hand, of the wind furnace, a clay-lined, domed wind channel reinforced with stone slabs, which tapers upwards to a free-standing chimney, and on the other hand, of a shaft-shaped forging furnace built from rubble stones and clay. The Iron Age smelting furnace Obersdorf is significant for the development of working and production conditions in the field of iron production, as it demonstrates an important developmental step for this technology.
