The slag heap is the last visible evidence of copper smelting in Rothenburg from the late Middle Ages to modern times. Thousands of tons of slag from the smelting were dumped on it. The basis for the smelting site was the hydropower of the Saale to generate the blowing winds and the copper shale mining in the Könnern, Golbitz, Kirchedlau and Wettin region. Later, hard coal mining in the Wettin and Löbejün area was also added, which made it possible to replace charcoal from the Harz with coke. Source: display board
