Well, I had actually hoped or expected that the dowel bench might have something to do with the devil, but all attempts to prove this using a Low German dictionary failed. They keep offering something to knock into the wall and screw in. The devil, the "Düvel", is supposed to be for that. So I'm at a loss... But maybe someone has a better/nicer explanation than that the dowel bench is a dowel bench... 🤷♂️
