Here you'll find two information panels about the history of this place: "THE FURNACE SITE Here stood the funeral hut of the knacker (flayer/fleaer), and thus the official knacker's shop for the region. In the 16th century, it was recognized that animal carcasses were a source of disease. Therefore, the population was obligated to hand over dead animals to the officially appointed knacker, who butchered them at this site. [...]" More information on site "THE JEWISH CEMETERY A large Jewish community lived in Stühlingen from the first third of the 16th century until the expulsion of all Jews in 1743. They paid large sums of money to the respective sovereign, as well as to the town council, for the right to live in the town. The letters of protection explicitly granted the resident Jews a burial site. This was located "beyond the Wutach River" in the knacker's forest, referred to in the cottager's chronicle as "the The cemetery is referred to as the "Jewish burial site above Schaffhauser Weg."
