February 6, 2024, Fort Maurepas Park Canopy

In the early 1700s, Fort Maurepas served as the capital of French Louisiana before being destroyed by fire. While the exact location remains unknown, the replica found here represents the history and discovery of this area.

The trail traveling down into the canyon at Red Bluff is a steep, washy trail. The path headed back up the actual canyon feels more like off-trail scrambling than standard hiking. If you don't feel comfortable coming up the canyon rocks, you can just return via the trail you hiked down, which is sandy near the bottom of the canyon and feels like trying to hike up a sand dune.
