The church took two years to build, from 1904 to 1907. It is made of concrete - the only other two known concrete churches are Bíldudal Church and Ingjaldshóll in Hellissandur. The church seats about 200 people and upstairs there is an organ that was installed in 1957. The first priest was Father Bjarna Símonarson, who gave his first sermon on May 19, 1907. In 1957, on the church's 50th anniversary, the famous Icelandic artist Erro created a mosaic artwork on the church's pulpit. The altarpiece in the church is a copy of "One thing is necessary" by Carl Bloch, a well-known Danish painter.
