The pile dwellings on Lake Ledro are among the most important archaeological sites in the Alps. They date back to the Bronze Age and are around 4,000 years old. The remains of this settlement were discovered in 1929 when the lake's water level was lowered. The people of that time built their houses on wooden piles directly on the shore. This construction method protected against moisture and floods and at the same time offered direct access to the water. Thanks to the special conditions at the bottom of the lake, numerous wooden remains, tools, ceramics, and everyday objects have been exceptionally well preserved. Today, the site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps". In the Museo delle Palafitte del Lago di Ledro, visitors can see faithful reconstructions of Bronze Age houses and learn a lot about the lives of the inhabitants at that time. The pile dwellings on Lake Ledro offer a fascinating insight into everyday life millennia ago. They show how closely humans were connected to nature even in prehistoric times and how skillfully they adapted to their environment. To this day, they are an impressive testament to the early history of the Ledro Valley.
