Queen Marie's Palace, Balchik

Highlight • Historical Site

The Romanian Queen Maria was enthusiastic about Baltschik's location and had a small summer palace and a botanical garden built there from 1924. After the death of her husband, the queen is said to have converted the palace into a love nest for a Muslim in an oriental style, which is indicated by a minaret in the palace park. The Italian architects Amerigo and Augustino were entrusted with the construction of the summer residence. The summer residence includes the actual palace surrounded by tall towers, a chapel where the queen willed her heart to be kept, a villa originally intended to house Romanian aristocrats and a stone throne under an old tree where queen Maria liked to sit to look at the sea. The Summer Palace is a mixture of Bulgarian, Moldavian, Moorish and Oriental architectural elements.

Ushakov Monument, Cape Kaliakra

The Ushakov Monument at Cape Kaliakra was erected in 2006 on the initiative of the "Society of Friends of Russia in Bulgaria" and executed by the Bulgarian sculptor Nikola Bogdanov. As early as 1968, Bogdanov created a 3 meter high base relief at Cape Kaliakra with the Cyrillic inscription "Ф.Ф.Ушаков. 1791 g.". The monument was dedicated to the 215th anniversary of the victory in the naval battle of Kaliakra on July 31st. / August 11, 1791greg. in which a Turkish fleet was defeated by Russian warships under Admiral Fyodor Ushakov during the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1791.

Rest stop

Highlight • Restaurant

This restaurant, located at the top end of the nature park, is the ideal place for a stopover. During my bike tour I did not discover another restaurant within the park, so this would be a good opportunity for cool drinks and some food.

Marion
September 15, 2025, Kaliakra Fortress

Legends When, in 323 BC, after the death of Alexander the Great, his governor Lysimachus seized control of all of Thrace in a struggle for power, his fleet, along with the stolen state treasure, is said to have sunk in a storm off Kaliakra. This is likely just as much a myth as the story of the girl Kaliakra and her 39 blond-braided companions who, in the face of the Turkish conquest of Bulgaria, are said to have thrown themselves from the steep cliffs into the sea to avoid ending up in a harem.
