Tvardishki Pass

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

Perfect tarmac and very few cars (even fewer cyclists!) The gradient is never too steep, whilst still being an epic mountain route. There are towns on both sides of the route for refuelling. In other words, this is a cyclists paradise! If you are cycling across the Balkans, this should be your route. We cycled through in Autumn and it was spectacularly beautiful!

City Garden, Nova Zagora

Highlight • Rest Area

As a central place, it offered us what we were looking for at lunchtime, with a stop in a restaurant. Shade and a place for our tandems. Since we always had some laundry to wash, this was also done in the public sanitary rooms. It was a good idea to dry these clothes in the midday heat on a line that we had stretched between the bikes. But only until a member of the national fountain monitoring front put himself in the limelight about our presence and our activities.
Not that the wheels with the laundry on the dried up lawn, a little away from the action, disturbed the aesthetics of the square. It bothered him and we understood it to mean that the lawn cannot take our actions. We accepted this and pushed our carriages next to a park bench on a paved square. He also disliked our new location on his next visit. Now he accused us of having washed the laundry in the fountain. Now it became too colorful for me and I asked, in my own quiet way, to leave us alone or to call the gendarmerie, who was in sight. A little shocked by my appearance, he left us alone from then on. After we relaxed so much, we continued our trip without going to prison. We got two new things in Nova Sagora. In the restaurant, a jug of cold curdled milk! and in front of the restaurant, the appearance of the revanchist representative.

Vratnik Abandoned Shelter

Highlight • Mountain Hut

This shelter is being used as a barn for animals. Inside it is dirty, does not have bunk beds. It might protect from rain, windows and door however are missing. For these reasons I would not suggest to stay overnight in this shelter. We hitch hiked to Kipilovo from Vratnik Pass where we stayed in a low cost guesthouse/hotel found on booking.

I can only agree with that. Perfect pass on very good asphalt, in sycamore and beech forests. There are a few drinking water points on both sides, all of which provided water in mid-May. It tastes good and I feel good afterwards. So you don't have to carry the water up the mountain.
