The Strawberry Line

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Nice traffic free route with lots of places to stop for refreshments along the way. Recommend the bakery at Winscombe.
Sadly, the numerous bike gates along the route are a pain if you're on a mountain/hybrid bike as they are too narrow.

Belmont Hill

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Good surface and therefore I prefer descending this hill and going up Wraxall hill. It has a couple of turns, but can be taken at speed. Would be good for doing loops Belmont to Wraxall

Avon Riverside Path (Bristol to Pill)

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Linking Bristol to Pill, this sometimes gravelly, sometimes rooty and mucky trail runs alongside the River Avon and is perfect for riders, walkers and joggers. Take more care during peak times and beware this is usually flooded with big puddles all through the winter!

Ashton Court Mansion

Check the closing times of the gates as your enter. They tend to follow sunset throughout the year.

Like cheddar gorge but smaller and less touristy = more enjoyable! You won't get stuck in a traffic jam climbing this one!

Wavering Down Trig Point

Highlight • Natural Monument

Owned and managed by the National Trust and part of the same SSSI as Crook Peak, Wavering Down is an impressive hill with even more impressive views. There's a trig point at the summit and the views include a glimpse of Cheddar reservoir. Half the down is open common land whilst the other half is fields.

Manageable on a gravel bike and a lot of fun!

Leigh Woods

Highlight • Natural Monument

Leigh Woods is a tranquil nature reserve situated next to the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge. With a delightful mix of broadleaf woodland, open grassy glades, and much flora and fauna, the reserve’s waymarked trails lead you to breathtaking viewpoints over Bristol, the suspension bridge crossing the Avon Gorge, and beyond. The woodland is in the care of the National Trust.

Bourton Combe Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Although there are some parallel built mountain biking trails through Bourton Combe, this bridleway is a brilliant linking trail from the village of Flax Bourton heading south.

You're in the woodland the whole time, climbing if you're heading in this direction with a really tricky rock slab section to tackle on the way up.

Take care, very slippery when wet!

Dolebury Warren Iron Age Hill Fort

Highlight • Natural Monument

As part of the nature reserve management there are sheep grazing to protect the rare plants and flowers that the grassland supports. It is important to keep your dog under close control and on a lead at all times on Dolebury Warren.

Dolebury Warren is an Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is owned by the National Trust and managed by Avon Wildlife Trust. The unusual mixture of wildflowers makes this a nationally important site for wildlife. 'Lime-loving' plants like rockrose flourish alongside such 'acid-loving' plants as bell heather, which survive on patches of acidic sand blown onto the site during the ice age.

The visible remains of Dolebury's past include the imposing double ramparts of an Iron Age hill fort and a medieval rabbit warren. This is a nationally protected site of archaeological interest.

Take the climb up the back of Portbury or Caswell hill and enjoy the descent down as a reward. As a climb it's got a sort of alpine feel, and while it's never really steep it does go on a bit. Due to the traffic I much prefer this as a descent, In a similar vein to Brockley Combe but that's overall a nicer climb.

Dolebury Warren is the site of an Iron Age hill fort and was also occupied during the Roman period. Today the site still has many earthworks to explore and bands of rock which may have been the foundations of walls. As a runner the ridgeline is fun to run with a not too steep ascent and fun descent whichever way you run it. The Limestone Link trail goes along the summit and it makes a good addition to a Beacon Batch loop from Burrington Combe.

The location of a manor house ever since the 11th century, Ashton Court and its extensive estate is a grand setting to the west of Bristol. Owned by the Smyth family between the 16th and 20th centuries, today the mansion and its stables are Grade I-listed. The surrounding estate includes a deer park, woodland, MTB trails and golfing facilities and is an absolute delight to explore, rewarding with fine views across Bristol. After a run in the parkland, the Courtyard Cafe is a tempting option.
