Haytor Rocks

Prepare to be amazed by Haytor Rocks! The much-photographed landmark is even more impressive when you experience it first-hand. Hound Tor is a breathtaking granite outcrop that rewards those who climb to the top with magnificent views over Dartmoor. According to legend, these rocks used to be hunting dogs, a story that may have inspired Sherlock Holmes' most famous case, Hound of the Baskervilles.

Yes Tor summit

Highlight • Summit

The second highest point in Dartmoor National Park offers stunning vistas of North Devon and Cornwall. Note: it is close to a military range, so check for firing times before your visit (dartmoor-ranges.co.uk/firing_notice_1.html). Always start out well equipped on tours through Dartmoor!

High Willhays summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

The highest point on Dartmoor and the highest summit south of the Brecon Beacons. Very accessible and an easy hike for most people to do. The best thing is the wonderful views, especially on a sky blue spring day like today. Love raw and rugged Dartmoor!❤️

Bellever Tor

Highlight • Summit

Fantastic Tor with big views in all directions and cannot be mistaken due to the triangulation point on its highest outcrop.

I almost always hike in from the North, coming from Postbridge which is a nice steady climb all the way to the base of this beautiful Tor.

Also to be noted that the nice wide path allows pushchairs and I myself have pushed my 4 yo to the top of Bellever Tor so we could play on these rocks together.

Valley of Rocks

Highlight • Gorge

One of the most incredible natural features of the North Devon coastline, the Valley of Rocks is a dry valley with steep cliffs and sea views. As you walk through here, keep an eye out for feral goats nibbling plants on precipitous rocks and bounding about with no care for the dramatic drops below. The goats have lived here for hundreds of years, although had to be reintroduced in the 70s after extreme winters in the 60s decimated the population.

Lynmouth

Highlight • Settlement

The villages of Lynton and Lynmouth, situated on the North Coast of Devon, are renowned for high sea cliffs, breathtaking natural beauty and unspoilt landscape. From here, you are perfectly placed to access the inner moor, visit historic houses, inspiring gardens, as well as catch glimpses of the majestic red deer and the wild Exmoor ponies.

North Walk (South West Coast Path)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

North Walk is one of the most stunning stretches of the South West Coast Path. Clinging to the cliff face, it offers views across to Wales and along the Exmoor coast.

It is an easy-going walk along North Walk from Lynton to the Valley of Rocks and it is equally easy to forget the work once involved in constructing it.

Fingle Bridge

Highlight • Viewpoint

Know that this location is very busy in good weather but nice :)

Tip by

Dartmoor has a fascinating industrial past and its myriad disused quarries are some of the clearest evidence. Just to the east of the phenomenal Haytor Rocks, lies Haytor Quarry. Part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest, this quarry is quite difficult to find, as it’s tucked away well out of sight if you’re just rambling about.

The granite removed from the quarry was transported on the granite tramway which ran from Haytor, through the enormous Stover family estate to be taken to the Channel via the Stover canal and shipped.

The quarry also resides in an area with plenty of evidence of ancient human habitation, with Bronze Age hut circles dotted around the immediate region.

ensure you have a good waterproof coat, don't go up when it's to dark as it's very rocky and uneven you would get very lost, in the summer it's amazing with great picnic spots and then it's very hot so sun cream needed definitely.

A beautiful route along the coast with great views. With a bit of luck, you might spot goats grazing on the steep slopes.

Bellever Tor is a hill near Postbridge in Dartmoor. It feels a bit like something from Lord of the Rings...

Super quiet little pocket of history just below the main Tor.

This tor is just a stone's throw from the nearby car park and towers over Dartmoor. Very impressive, good for a short tour, as a starting point for visiting other tors, for a picnic (depending on the unpredictable weather here 😉) or recently also for climbing (you could see a few people free climbing - but I can't say for sure whether it's allowed) and for treasure hunts. Otherwise just beautiful nature and (outside of tourist times) nice and quiet.
