Unlike most rivers, Instead of flowing continuously above ground, Santa Fe River plunges underground at O' Leno State Park, three miles upstream. Here, it mysteriously re-emerges from the depths, forming a striking circular pool before continuing its journey towards the Suwannee River.

This state park isn't where the Santa Fe River begins, but rather where it makes a dramatic reappearance. This “resurgence” is a result of Florida's fascinating geological makeup, where limestone allows water to easily dissolve and create underground caverns. The Santa Fe River simply follows this hidden course for a while before re-emerging at River Rise.
