Former Hungarian–Yugoslavian Border Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

To prevent people migrating from Hungary to Yugoslavia and perhaps further West, this border was heavily guarded, mined and protected by electric fence. The regime somewhat softened after Stalin's death, but the border remained guarded until the countries entered Schengen in 2007. Reading the information at one of the crossings (see another highlight) and following the path along the border gives some impression of the iron curtain and the measures that the governments in the Soviet block needed to take to prevent their citizens from escaping the communist "paradise on Earth". :)

While perfectly OK for gravel/trekking bikes, the road can be muddy after rain, in which case you'll be more comfortable on mtb.

Border Guard Park

Highlight • Historical Site

This direct border memorial and exhibition site is further away from Szalafő, where we are actually on the Slovenian - Hungarian border. Border guard stones and signs, as well as the Border Guard Park itself, where we find a rain shelter, panels, and an Iron Curtain installation about the historical shame that once stretched here. On the explanatory panels, we can learn more about this structure. The area itself is located in a beautiful forest area, where a very special feeling takes over us among the multitude of border stones. I definitely recommend visiting it!

Built after WW2, a series such towers was used to monitor the neighboring regions in Hungary. This brick tower has been renovated and is - in my opinion - much nicer than the newer, steel tower a bit further north.
