Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion

An inscription confirms that the temple was dedicated to Poseidon, and it was built upon the remains of an even earlier poros temple whose foundations are still visible. This Archaic temple was razed by the Persians in 490 BCE when it still under construction. Very little is known about this earlier temple, but it is certain that it was a revered landmark, visible from afar as sailors approached or left the safety of the Attica harbors. The newer temple closely follows the size and plan of the more ancient one.

Millions of years ago, the lake was located inside a huge cave and was fed by numerous hot springs and seawater. Following an earthquake in the area, the roof of the cave collapsed, leaving the lake as it is today.
The lake covers an area of two hectares and the water level is 50cm higher than the local sea level. The lake is thought to be 50-100 meters deep and because it is still fed by hot springs and seawater, there is a distinct current that can be felt in the water.
On the far side of the lake there is a rocky cliff face with a cave entrance which leads in to an extensive cave system with 14 tunnels covering 3,123 metres. So far, explorations have not found the furthest point of the rocky labyrinth.
One of the tunnels is 800 meters in length – making it the longest of its kind in the world. This tunnel has a huge stalagmite which has raised questions amongst geologists about the formation of cave and the whole Mediterranean area.

The sanctuary of Artemis Tauropolos is known mainly from the literary sources. In Euripides' play Iphigeneia in Tauris, the founder of the sanctuary is mentioned as having been Orestes, who transferred the wooden cult statue (xoanon) of the goddess from Tauris, disembarking at Halai on the eastern coast of Attica to build the goddess' temple. Euripides and Menander in his comedy Epitrepontes ('Men at Arbitration') provide information about the character and events included in the festival of the 'Tauropolia' held in honor of the goddess: night-time processions, ceremonies of an unbridled Dionysian nature, and events that included the symbolic enactment of human sacrifices.
The sanctuary of Artemis Tauropolos was the most important site of worship as well as the center of the Deme of Halai Araphenides. The sanctuary's operation is documented from the 7th century B.C. to the 1st century A.D., as attested by the finds, which are votives, as well as utilitarian and cooking ware vases, which point to the holding of banquets within the context of worship.
In the sanctuary area there have been found two porches (east and west), a gravel road, and bases for marble votives. A small temple with a deposit containing a great many votives dating from Geometric to Classical times was revealed 200 meters south of the temple of Artemis Tauropolos.
