The terrain is nice, but the signage isn't great... we start a circuit (no. 5) and very quickly there are no more signs... Circuit no. 7 seems well signposted

Pyramidal circuit Follow the black arrows n°7, some of them are missing (the GPS tracks help to make the complete tour). There are also a few climbs/descents that are a little technical but short to avoid for real beginners but it's easy to do all the same. Some area a little muddy during rainy periods. I tried to get as close as possible to the original circuit or the arrows by doing the circuit several times & comparing the GPS tracks recorded and adding the missing paths on OpenStreeMap (sometimes the path of the map & the arrows differ a little, e.g. from the 1st entrance to the forest, the arrows pass a little lower than the path on the map, so I made a little mix between the 2, which adds a little climb ;) )

The Drocourt slag heap is like a bike park (without the cable cars ;o). Ideal for improving technique or letting off steam for two hours

Yes, there are options for families and beginners. Étangs de Toutevoie is noted as family-friendly. ValJoly, while not a highlight in the guide, is a significant destination with six marked VTT circuits catering to all levels, from easy to difficult, and offers electric mountain bike rentals for more accessible rides. Pumptracks, such as those in Labourse, Ostricourt, and Lille, are also excellent for all ages to develop bike handling skills in a controlled environment.
For challenging rides, consider areas with unique terrain like the mining spoil heaps. The Descent of Mont de Boeschepe is known for its technical downhill route with deep canals and wells. The Terrils de Raismes also offer distinct challenges with varied terrain and technical sections, popular among experienced mountain bikers for physically demanding climbs and descents.
Absolutely. The region's mining spoil heaps, or "terrils," offer both unique terrain and historical significance. For instance, Terril de Drocourt and Terril 46 of Verquigneul provide opportunities for climbs and offer panoramic views. The Terrils de Raismes combine natural forest riding with this unique historical landscape. ValJoly is set within the picturesque Avesnois Regional Natural Park, featuring a large lake and extensive forest.
Beyond the main highlights, the The Two Humps – Phalempin Forest Singletrack offers a pleasant singletrack experience. Another popular spot is the Singletrack at the Exit of the Marais de Fretin, which is a very enjoyable path through the marshes. These trails are appreciated by the komoot community for their natural beauty and engaging routes.

Pumptrack Labourse, Pumptrack Ostricourt, and Pumptrack Lille (at the BTwin Decathlon village) all offer specialized circuits with rollers and berms where you can generate momentum without pedaling. These are great for improving balance, rhythm, and bike handling for various types of bikes, including BMX and mountain bikes.
Beyond mountain biking, Hauts-de-France offers a variety of outdoor activities. For road cycling, routes like the North Sea Cycle Route or the Compiègne Forest Loop are available, detailed in the Cycling around Hauts-De-France guide. There are also dedicated MTB trails like the Scherpenberg Forest Trail, found in the MTB Trails around Hauts-De-France guide.
The best time to visit Hauts-de-France for mountain biking is typically during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months. During these periods, the weather is generally mild and pleasant, with less extreme heat than summer and fewer muddy conditions than winter. This allows for comfortable riding and better trail conditions across the diverse terrains, from forest singletracks to terrils.
Many bike parks and trails in Hauts-de-France offer excellent viewpoints. The Mons-en-Pévèle Mountain Bike Descent provides a beautiful descent with a magnificent view of the surrounding region. The terrils, such as Terril de Drocourt and Roost-Warendin Slag Heap 138, often serve as elevated points offering panoramic views over the landscape.
The terrain in Hauts-de-France bike parks is quite varied. You'll encounter natural forest singletracks, technical descents with ruts and canals, and unique landscapes formed by mining spoil heaps (terrils) that provide varied surfaces and challenging climbs. Some areas, like ValJoly, feature trails around a large lake, while pumptracks offer asphalt or specialized surfaces for skill practice.
Visitors frequently highlight the diverse experiences available. They appreciate the unique challenge of the technical descents, the scenic beauty of forest trails, and the panoramic views from the terrils. Many also enjoy the opportunity to develop skills at the pumptracks and the overall natural setting that combines physical activity with exploration of the region's distinct landscapes.
