West Lake is a quieter water pocket within Kentucky-Alleyne Provincial Park, away from the busier feel of the main lakes. Framed by the dry Interior forest and calm shoreline, it makes a peaceful pause on the trail, especially if you want a softer, more tucked-away view before looping back toward Kentucky or Alleyne Lake.

Kentucky Lake is the kind of turquoise surprise that makes a short hike feel bigger than it is. The easy loop follows the lakeshore through fir and pine trees, with changing viewpoints, swimming spots and calm water all along the way. It's a great spot for families, paddlers, or anyone needing a beautiful leg-stretch.

Monck Provincial Park is home to a campground and day-use area. The main access to trails is from the parking area near the beach and picnic day-use areas. There is a trail that loops around the area with some mild elevation changes, but it is mostly approachable and on packed dirt and gravel the whole time. There are some very good viewpoints of the lake and river, as well as some pine forest that the trail winds through. Pit toilets are located near the day-use and campground areas, and water is seasonally available at the campground, but availability can vary, so it’s best to bring your own water.

This upper loop on the north end of Monck Provincial Park is packed dirt and gravel and an easy approach. Through the clearings you can catch some really pleasant views of Nicola Lake in the distance.

This is one of the steepest parts of the trail at Monck Park, but also one of the best payoffs. You get a really nice panorama overlooking the Nicola River and Nicola Lake from here.

Christie Falls Trail takes you through coastal rainforest toward one of the area’s most impressive waterfalls. The hike is relatively short at around 2 kilometres out and back with about 105 metres of elevation gain, but is generally considered moderately challenging due to roots, uneven terrain, and some steeper sections.

0

0

Reaching the base of the falls requires a steep, rope-assisted descent, and the final section involves scrambling down rocky terrain. Because of the exposed and slippery conditions, it’s generally not recommended for young children. Many hikers choose to admire the falls from above instead. However, if you are comfortable with the descent the view from the bottom is well worth the effort. The waterfall drops over a rocky cliff into a small canyon and is especially impressive during wetter months when the flow is strongest.

The Bear Creek Recreation Site serves as a common starting point for hikes in the forested hills south of Nanaimo, including the route to Christie Falls. The small recreation site provides basic access to the trail network with free roadside parking and entry to several forest trails.
