Kostrzyn Fortress

Highlight • Historical Site

The former fortress of Küstrin, or rather what is left of it, is definitely worth a look. Much has been restored in recent years and there are information boards everywhere that give visitors a little insight into the history. It is also a place that makes you think, because the old town was completely destroyed. It is just two kilometers from the Oder dyke to here and the detour is worth it.

Ruins of Kostrzyn's Old Town and Fortress

Highlight • Historical Site

historically interesting and sad place -
"Frederick II's father, King Frederick William I, threatened to have both executed because of desertion, and both were sentenced to a court-martial at Schloss Köpenick and Katte sentenced to life imprisonment (with regard to the crown prince, the court did not declare jurisdiction) Wilhelm I tightened the condemnation of Kattes to a death sentence and ordered the execution by beheading. " and "The king is said to have forced his son to watch the execution in the fortress of Kuestrin."

Bastion Philipp, Küstrin Fortress

Highlight • Historical Site

The Philipp Bastion formed the southeastern protection of the city. It is located directly on the Oder and was also surrounded by the Warta in the 16th century. It was designed by the engineer Chiaramelli. It was built according to the plan of a square by Linari in the first construction period of the city fortifications.

In 1569, a windmill was installed on the Philipp bastion, similar to the Queen bastion. This stately mill had a small outbuilding. In 1662 the bastion was rebuilt under the direction of the Dutch fortress engineer Jungblut. The mill was demolished when the fortress was next expanded.

The French fortress engineers Cayart and Charretau built a separation wall on the bastion in 1709. It leads over a branch of the river to the Kietzer Ufer and thus forms a protective channel. The dike in the wall regulated the water level around the fortress. In 1726 this canal was rebuilt.

In 1738 six cannons were installed on the bastion. The corner towers of the bastion fell victim to the Russian bombardment of 1758. Another modernization took place in 1770, this time by the engineer Colonel Petrii. During the next modernization from 1891-1899, the first waterworks was installed on the bastion. This served both the fortress and the residents of the city.

At the same time, a miniature tower was built on the wall, which contemporaries referred to as the "monk's head".

The Philipp Bastion was a protection for the entrance to the city and fortress, later also for the Kietzer Tor and the routes to and from Frankfurt and Sonnenburg.

In 1929 the "City History Museum" was built in the bastion's casemates. When the fortress was rebuilt in the 1930s, the bastion's protective wall was removed. During the war, the casemates served as protection for the defenders of the city.

The bastion suffered badly during the Russian bombardment. Similar to other buildings in the fortress, it was built from bricks. The inner rooms were partly plastered and laid out like the letter "C".

The bastion is still today (better: today again) a pearl of the Küstriner fortifications. It is planned, similar to before the war, to open a city and fortress museum on its premises.

Palace and church in Dąbroszyn

Highlight • Historical Site

From Wikipedia:
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C4%85broszyn_(Witnica)
In German, Tamsel is a place not far from Küstrin. It was first mentioned in documents around 1200, making it one of the oldest places in the Neumark region.

"Tamsel is a wealthy, beautifully situated village, about an hour's walk northeast of Küstrin. Wooded hills, whose winding lines presumably mark the old bed of the Warta River, enclose it from the north, while to the south the landscape lies open, and the river branches wind in all sorts of twists and turns through the marshland."

– Theodor Fontane: Wanderings through the Margraviate of Brandenburg, The Oderland

Tamsel Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Tamsel Castle (Palac Dąbroszyn in Polish) is located in Dąbroszyn (Tamsel) and was built by Hans Adam von Schöning around 1686 after his return from the siege of Ofen (1684/1686) (now Budapest) and the successful storming with the help of Greek craftsmen. Before the Battle of Zorndorf in 1758, the castle was sacked by Russian troops and much was destroyed. The plant became famous through Theodor Fontane and his work Walks through the Mark Brandenburg. In the last days of World War II, the commander of the First Byelorussian Front, General Zhukov, lived in the undamaged castle while preparing for the Berlin operation. Towards the end of the war it was used as a military hospital for the Red Army. In the meantime, the lower floor could be restored with EU funds up to 2004. However, the funds were only sufficient for part of the work and meanwhile the castle is half-finished for sale and an investor is being sought.

Count's Palace Kamień Wielki

Highlight • Castle

The settlement was mentioned in 1295 as a border town between the possessions of the Knights Templar and Brandenburg. After the Thirty Years' War, it was completely abandoned. In the mid-18th century, an estate and a paper mill were established here. The village changed owners many times. In 1660, Hans von Schlabrendorf, commander of the fortress in Kołobrzeg, became the owner, followed by the von Schöning and Wreech families, and in 1822, Amelia von Dönhoff. In 1924, the estate was parceled out.
A neoclassical palace from the turn of the first half of the 19th century, rebuilt several times (currently a social welfare home).
A vast landscape park (17 ha) established in 1834 according to the design of the famous garden architect Peter Joseph Lenné. The park features 2 ponds with islands, avenues, and many monumental trees, including beautiful specimens of oaks, hornbeams, elms (circumference up to 500 cm), and poplars (circumference up to 610 cm).

September 24, 2025, Bastion Philipp of the Küstrin Fortress

One of the three preserved bastions of the Kostrzyn Fortress and the only one open to the public. Since 2014, the Filip Bastion has housed a permanent museum exhibition. It presents selected aspects of the history of the town and garrison from the fortress' inception to the military struggles that have raged in the surrounding area over the centuries. The battles for the town in February and March 1945, as well as the history of the bastion itself, are presented in detail. The process of gradual expansion and modernization of the fortress is presented concisely and clearly. Considerable attention is paid to the cataclysm of the Seven Years' War and the destruction of the town on the eve of the Battle of Sarbinowo on August 25, 1758. A separate section is also devoted to the history of Kostrzyn Castle, depicted as the ancestral seat of the Hohenzollern family.

The castle is supposed to look better, at least on the ground floor, than its exterior appearance suggests, but I was denied this insight.
