Doune Bothy

Highlight • Mountain Hut

This bothy is beautifully situated on the coast of Loch Lomond. With room for up to ten hikers, it contains an open fireplace and there is plenty of dry driftwood to be found on the loch.

As it is unmanaged, it's very important to follow the Leave No Trace principles and back out your rubbish.

Drymen Campsite

I did not sleep in the square myself, but all in all, it looked very solid. Simple rooms (see pictures attached) but priced in order. A great way to spend the night around Drymen.

Camping: £ 7 per person per night
Kocoon (sleeps 2) - two available: £ 30 per night

Rowchoish Bothy

Highlight • Mountain Hut

If you are hiking on the West Highland Way, this will mark your first bothy – the Scottish name for an unmanaged hut maintained for hikers and mountaineers.

The Rowchoisch Bothy has room for six+ people in sleeping bags and houses an open fireplace for those cold winter nights. As these bothies are not managed it's very important you do your bit to keep it clean and tidy, and you're also asked not to cut live wood, but to collect dead wood to burn in the fireplace.

For those more artistically inclined, you may recognize this bothy from its appearance in the unsettling film Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansson.

April 16, 2025, Drymen Campsite

Great little camp site, just before you head down to Drymen. Does pizzas to order in the evening which were really good. Has an indoor seating area, under cover. No drying room but there are washing lines under cover. There is a small kitchen area for doing dishes etc. very limited plug space compared to some other sites we stayed at.

Good if you want to find a quick place to stay in bad weather, the Sallochy Campsite is a little further on, but it's nicer. Be careful: the pitches closest to the wooden pavilion are infested with midges!

A great hostel to stay the night on a cycling tour. It has a lockable bike storage area, drying room, and it's own cafe and bar so is good for a refreshing meal and a beer or two before tomorrow's journey

Small campsite on the West Highland Way. Toilets, showers, charging options for power banks or e-bikes and some seating under a barn roof. Small shop in the reception (Purple Roundhouse).
