"The site of the park was once within the boundaries of the 2,300-acre Royal Deer Park of Toxteth which became "disparked" in 1591. The land eventually came under the Earl of Sefton's control. In 1867 the Council purchased 375 acres of land of the park's development for £250,000 from the Earl of Sefton. Sefton Park is one of the largest in the "ribbon of Parks" originally envisaged in 1850s by the Liverpool Improvement Committee and which came eventually to include Newsham and Stanley Parks. A European competition was launched to design a grand park. 29 entries were received and the competition was won by a French landscape architect Édouard André with work on the design also undertaken by Liverpool architect Lewis Hornblower. The park was opened on 20 May 1872 by Prince Arthur who dedicated it "for the health and enjoyment of the townspeople". A favourite amongst families and beginners who lack confidence on the busy roads that span the length and breadth of the Wirral Peninsula, Seacombe to New Brighton offers relatively flat, traffic free cycling with scenic views of the Liverpool Waterfront and some of the City’s most iconic buildings. See the infamous Ferry Across the Mersey sail from Seacombe Ferry Terminal and perhaps visit the Spaceport before or after your ride. Your destination at New Brighton has beaches, a soft play centre, crazy golf and a marine lake, so you could take a crab line and some bait if you would like something different to keep the kids occupied. New Brighton is also home to Café Crème, which serves some of the best ice cream and coffee in the region. There’s plenty to see and do before you get to the turnaround point. En route, you have the option to stop at Vale Park to see the Fairy Garden and the nearby Black Pearl, a driftwood Pirate Ship, which is one of the main attractions.

Around 8000 years ago as Britain was becoming the island that we recognise today the earliest people living here were hunter-gatherers in what is known as the Mesolithic period. Evidence for where they lived is widespread in Britain and many sites have been archaeologically excavated. However, good surviving evidence for how these people lived is restricted to a very few sites. The common view has been that they were scattered nomadic people who lived in small groups with little evidence for them building substantial settlements. In the last ten years or so understanding of the period has begun to improve slowly with new discoveries that have modified this view. The most recent discovery in 2012-13 of rare 8,000 year old houses at Lunt Meadows, Sefton, north of Liverpool, is another important development in our understanding of a way of life that began to disappear about 6000 years ago with the introduction of farming into Britain.

As part of the Port of Liverpool, Canning Half Tide Dock forms the connection between Canning Dock and Albert Dock and is also the entrance to the dry dock. The river water level is regulated via approximately 14 m long lock gates, and access to the “masonry island” is via swing bridges. Adjacent to the dock is the former pilot building, which was converted into a museum in 1980. Both the building and the dock itself are now part of the Merseyside Maritime Museum.
