Abbey Bridge and Weir

Highlight • Historical Site

This gorgeous 18th-century bridge is one of several in the heart of Tavistock but is perhaps the prettiest. The River Tavy rushes underneath to pass down the weir, creating a series of little waterfalls in lush surroundings.

The bridge features both on the Dartmoor Way cycle route and National Cycle Network Route 27.

Lydford Gorge and Castle

Highlight • Gorge

Created by King Alfred the Great, Lydford has a rich history. It was once the second biggest town in Devon during the reign of Edward the Confessor, now it has a population of less than 500.

Lydford Castle was built in 1132 on the site of a pre existing castle built just after the Norman Conquest. Entry is free, further details available at the English Heritage website english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/lydford-castle-and-saxon-town

Lydford Gorge is managed by the National Trust and those who take a walk through the woods will be rewarded with the spectacular 30ft White Lady waterfall. See their website for more information nationaltrust.org.uk/lydford-gorge

The deepest gorge in the southwest, Lydford Gorge is a beautiful spot to explore thick woodland, gushing waterfalls and meandering rivers. There's an impressive waterfall here too. The Gorge is owned by the National Trust and open from 10am - 5pm and costs £11.20 per adult. There is also an on-site cafe for a nice slice of cake!

So if you're in the area and willing to pay the entrance fee, then you can take a look. If you don't see it, you're not missing much. It's really just a small area that's well worth seeing. But I have to be fair ☝️... ... the circular trail was closed because of a landslide. So we're missing half of the trail. Maybe the other half would have changed our minds. For people who spend a lot of time in nature, it's OK, nothing more. I hope I'm not lynched here now 😬🙈. There's really beautiful nature in Dartmoor and it's free too 😉.

Quite nice 😏. If you pass by you can take it with you, you don't have to go there specially 😬.

Warning! Apparently there was a landslide, so the path along the river is closed. You can only get to the waterfall through the National Trust area. Entry fee is £11 per person! It's no longer a quiet place. Children play right by the waterfall, so you can't take any nice photos. It's a real shame! We would have liked to have known this before the hike. Then we definitely wouldn't have done it!!!

Lovely old bridge, and weir in full flow.

The adventurous path through the gorge, past the White LaDy waterfall, the Tunnel Falls and the Devils Couldron is always worth it!

A really beautiful waterfall in a dreamlike environment. If there is not too much going on here, the square invites you to take a relaxing break.
